Claude Pricing Explained: Free, Pro, and Max

Claude’s pricing has three consumer tiers — Free, Pro, and Max — plus separate Team and Enterprise plans for organizations. The Max tier in particular confuses people because it isn’t one fixed price; it scales with how much usage you choose. This breaks down what each plan actually costs and includes, based on Anthropic’s official pricing page.

Free Plan

The Free plan includes chat access on web, desktop, and mobile, the ability to search the web, create files and run code, memory across conversations, connecting apps and tools, and creating Artifacts. It does not include Claude Code, Claude Design/Slides/Docs, Claude Science, Projects, or access to Claude’s larger Opus model.

Pro Plan

Pro is priced at $17/month if billed annually ($200 charged up front) or $20/month if billed monthly. It includes everything in Free, plus more usage, the ability to hand off and schedule tasks, Claude Design/Slides/Docs, Claude Science, Projects, access to more Claude models (including Opus), Claude Code, and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365 integrations.

Max Plan

Max is built for people who use Claude throughout the day. It starts from $100/month and comes in two usage tiers: Max 5x (five times the usage of Pro) and Max 20x (twenty times the usage of Pro), both measured per 5-hour session. Max also raises output limits and adds priority access during high-traffic periods. Both Max tiers are billed monthly only — there’s no annual discount option for Max the way there is for Pro.

Team and Enterprise

Team plans offer Standard and Premium seats (Premium gives roughly 5x the usage of Standard). Enterprise is priced at $20 per seat per month plus usage billed at API rates, billed annually, and adds security and admin features like SSO, SCIM, audit logs, and custom data retention controls on top of everything in Team.

Billing Differences

Pro is the only consumer plan with an annual discount option (paying $200 up front works out to $17/month instead of $20). Max and Team are billed monthly regardless of commitment length. Enterprise is billed annually.

Important Usage Limits

Every plan has usage limits that reset on a rolling 5-hour session window, and paid plans add a weekly cap on top of that. Usage across web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code all draws from the same pool — there’s no separate allowance for coding versus chat. How far your usage goes depends on conversation length, model choice, and which features you use, so Anthropic doesn’t publish a fixed message count for any plan.

Who Each Plan Is Designed For

  • Free — casual, everyday questions without a recurring cost.
  • Pro — people who use Claude regularly for writing, research, or light coding and want Claude Code included.
  • Max — people who work with Claude most of the day and would otherwise hit Pro’s usage limits repeatedly.
  • Team / Enterprise — organizations that need centralized billing, admin controls, and security features on top of usage.

What May Cost Extra

When you hit your plan’s usage limit, paid plans can turn on usage credits to keep working at standard API rates rather than waiting for the limit to reset. This is opt-in, not automatic, so it won’t silently add charges unless you enable it.

Alternatives

ChatGPT follows a similar Free-to-paid structure, with Plus at $20/month and Pro at $200/month. See the full ChatGPT vs Claude comparison or the broader list of ChatGPT alternatives for other options.

FAQ

Is Claude Pro worth it over Free?

That depends on how often you hit Free’s usage limits and whether you need Claude Code, Projects, or access to Claude’s larger models — all of which are Pro-only.

What’s the actual difference between Max 5x and Max 20x?

Both give more usage than Pro per 5-hour session — 5x and 20x respectively. Max 20x costs more than Max 5x; check the current price for your account region on Anthropic’s pricing page, since Max 5x is listed “from $100/month” and 20x is priced higher.

Does Claude Code cost extra on top of Pro or Max?

No — Claude Code is included in all paid plans and draws from the same usage pool as chat, rather than being billed separately.

Can I switch plans later?

Yes, plans can be upgraded or downgraded through account settings; refer to Anthropic’s billing help documentation for specifics on proration and timing.
